         Pursuant to a notice posted in accordance with Senate Rule  
         11.11, a public hearing of the Senate Committee on Criminal  
         Justice (Interim) was held on Tuesday, March 31, 1998 in the  
         Capitol Extension, Room E1.012, at Austin, Texas.

         The Chair called the meeting to order at 9:30 am. 
          
         The following members arrived after the roll was called:   
         Senator Bill Ratliff 
         Senator Florence Shapiro 
         Senator Royce West 
          
         The following business was transacted. 
          
         Testimony was taken on Interim Charge 2:  Review the medical  
         and mental health treatment of  inmates while incarcerated in  
         TDCJ facilities and evaluate the effectiveness of mental  
         health treatment for offenders after they have been released.   
         Offer recommendations for any necessary statutory or  
         regulatory changes.   
          
         Witnesses testifying and registering on the Interim Charge are  
         shown on the attached list.   
          
         There being no further business, at 11:54 am Senator Whitmire  
         announced that the Committee stand recessed subject to the  
         call of the Chair.  Without objection, it was so ordered.
