DIGEST 

Currently, the maximum claim amount for civil cases with concurrent
jurisdiction between county, justice, and small claims courts is $5,000.
This bill increases this maximum claim amount, which authorizes certain
courts to have concurrent jurisdiction with justice courts, to $10,000. 

PURPOSE

As proposed, S.B. 55 increases the maximum claim amount to $10,000 which
authorizes certain courts to have concurrent jurisdiction with justice
courts. 

RULEMAKING AUTHORITY

This bill does not grant any additional rulemaking authority to a state
officer, institution, or agency. 

SECTION BY SECTION ANALYSIS

SECTION 1.  Amends Sections 26.042(a) and (d), Government Code, to increase
the maximum claim amount to $10,000, rather than $5,000, which authorizes a
county court to have concurrent jurisdiction with justice and district
courts in civil areas. 

SECTION 2.  Amends Section 27.031(a), Government Code, to make a conforming
change. 

SECTION 3.  Amends Section 28.003(a), Government Code, to make a conforming
change. 

SECTION 4.  Effective date:  September 1, 1999.  
            Makes application of this Act prospective.

SECTION 5.  Emergency clause.
