DIGEST 

Currently, a person can be excused from grand jury service if that person
is 65 years or older.  S.B. 217 increases that age requirement to 70 years. 

PURPOSE

As proposed, S.B. 217 authorizes a person to be excused from jury duty if
the person is older than 70 years. 

RULEMAKING AUTHORITY

This bill does not grant any additional rulemaking authority to a state
officer, institution, or agency. 

SECTION BY SECTION ANALYSIS

SECTION 1.  Amends Article 19.25, Code of Criminal Procedure, to authorize
a person to be excused from grand jury service if the person is older than
70 years, rather than 65 years. 

SECTION 2.  Effective date: September 1, 1999.
  Makes application of this Act prospective.

SECTION 3.  Emergency clause.
