SRC-PNG S.B. 264 76(R) BILL ANALYSIS Senate Research Center S.B. 264 76R4569 AJA-DBy: Duncan Intergovernmental Relations 2/9/1999 As Filed DIGEST Currently, under Texas law, the probationary period for a police officer in a municipality having a police academy is shorter than the probationary period for police officers in a municipality without a police academy. This bill equalizes the required probationary period for police officers in a municipality having a police academy with the one-year probationary period for police officers in a municipality without a police academy. PURPOSE As proposed, S.B. 264 establishes a probationary period for a police officer under the municipal civil service law. RULEMAKING AUTHORITY This bill does not grant any additional rulemaking authority to a state officer, institution, or agency. SECTION BY SECTION ANALYSIS SECTION 1. Amends Section 143.027, Local Government Code, to require a probationary period for a police officer for one year from the date commissioned. Makes conforming changes. SECTION 2. Effective date: September 1, 1999. Makes application of this Act prospective. SECTION 3. Emergency clause.
