DIGEST

Currently, Texas law requires applicants seeking court reporter
certification to use a manual or electric typewriter for transcription in
part of the examination. This bill would allow machines other than
typewriters to be used.

PURPOSE

As proposed, S.B. 424 deletes criteria relating to the examination required
for certification as a court reporter.

RULEMAKING AUTHORITY

This bill does not grant any additional rulemaking authority to a state
officer, institution, or agency.

SECTION BY SECTION ANALYSIS

SECTION 1. Amends Section 52.023(b), Government Code, to require an
applicant to prepare, rather than type, a transcript of the material taken
down as part of the examination for certification as a court reporter.
Deletes text authorizing the use of a manual or an electric typewriter.

SECTION 2. Emergency clause.
            Effective date: upon passage.
