SRC-DPW C.S.S.B. 510 76(R)BILL ANALYSIS Senate Research CenterC.S.S.B. 510 By: Shapleigh Education 4/23/1999 Committee Report (Substituted) DIGEST Currently, Section 51.803, Education Code, requires students who graduate in the top 10 percent of their high school graduating class to be given automatic admission to public universities of Texas in an effort to address the issue of diversity in public institutions of higher education. It has been cited that some citizens are concerned that this provision in the law has not realized its true potential because students and school districts around the state have not been properly notified of the opportunities for automatic college admission. This bill would require all public high schools to post appropriate signs in each counselor's office and each administrative office indicating the substance of Section 51.803 regarding automatic college admission. PURPOSE As proposed, C.S.S.B. 510 requires each high school administrative and counselor's office to post signs indicating the substance of the law regarding automatic college admission.
