SRC-AXB S.B. 800 76(R) BILL ANALYSIS Senate Research Center S.B. 800 76R5066 CBH-DBy: Ellis Human Services 4/26/1999 As Filed DIGEST Currently, the number of non-school sponsors of the summer food service program is decreasing. Between 1995-1998, the number of non-school sponsors had declined by 23 percent. The participation of non-school sponsors becomes more important in July and August, but because there are so few sponsors, the number of meals served during these months declines dramatically. Last summer, only 13 percent of eligible children ate summer food service program meals. Approximately 30 percent of all Texas children are hungry, or are at risk of suffering from hunger. S.B. 800 creates provisions for enhancing and increasing participation in the summer food service program. PURPOSE As proposed, S.B. 800 creates provisions for enhancing the summer meal preparation program.
