SRC-SLL S.B. 1229 76(R)BILL ANALYSIS Senate Research CenterS.B. 1229 By: Ellis Finance 7/1/1999 Enrolled DIGEST Currently, retired or former judges or justices who serve on a district court assignment receive 85 percent of the regular judge's salary, pro rata. The presiding judges have not received a salary increase since 1991; their workload, however, has increased during the past eight years. S.B. 1229 will raise the amount of compensation received by the presiding judge of an administrative judicial region. PURPOSE As enrolled, S.B. 1229 increases the compensation of presiding judges of administrative judicial regions. RULEMAKING AUTHORITY This bill does not grant any additional rulemaking authority to a state officer, institution, or agency. SECTION BY SECTION ANALYSIS SECTION 1. Amends Sections 74.051(b) and (c), Government Code, to require a presiding judge to receive a salary not to exceed $23,000 a year, rather than $18,000 a year, except as provided by Subsection (c). Provides that certain judges are entitled to an annual salary for each fiscal year based on the number of courts and judges in the administrative region as follows: 30 to 49 courts and judges, $25,000; 50 to 69 courts and judges, $30,000; 70 to 89 courts and judges, $35,000; or 90 or more courts and judges, $40,000, rather than $20,000, $25,000, $30,000, or $35,000, respectively. SECTION 2. Effective date: September 1, 1999. SECTION 3. Emergency clause.
