DIGEST 

Currently, 170 retired and former judges earn 85 percent of a regular
judge's salary.  S.B. 1719 repeals the law determining the salaries of
retired and former judges, effectively basing a retired or former judge's
salary on the current salary of a regular judge. 

PURPOSE

As proposed, S.B. 1719 repeals the law regarding the salary of a retired
judge or justice assigned to a district court. 

RULEMAKING AUTHORITY

This bill does not grant any additional rulemaking authority to a state
officer, institution, or agency. 

SECTION BY SECTION ANALYSIS

SECTION 1.  Repealer:  Sections 74.061(h) and (i), Government Code
(regarding the salary of a retired or former judge or justice assigned to a
district court). 

SECTION 2.  Effective date:  September 1, 1999.

SECTION 3.  Emergency clause.
