SRC-JBJ S.C.R. 42 76(R) BILL ANALYSIS Senate Research Center S.C.R. 42 76R7374 MDM-DBy: Luna Administration 3/9/1999 As Filed DIGEST Currently, the Centro Alameda/Centro de Artes Latino Museum is being developed in San Antonio. Located in San Antonio's historic Market Square, the museum will be a hub for research, education, and programming related to Hispanic culture in the United States. It will showcase the distinctive Latino cultural experience, as well as provide a museum studies program and a theater arts program. Several groups are making the museum a reality. The City of San Antonio has donated $1.5 million toward the project; the University of Texas at San Antonio is collaborating to create the museum and theater arts program; and the Smithsonian Institution of Washington, in its first affiliation, will exchange exhibition items with the museum. With national and local partnerships already secured, state participation ensures this initiative will benefit a diverse number of Texans. S.C.R. 42 designates the Centro Alameda/Centro de Artes Latino Museum as the official Texas State Latino Museum. PURPOSE As proposed, S.C.R. 42 submits the following resolution: That the 76th Legislature support the museum's contribution to the state's culturally rich history by designating the museum as the official Texas State Latino Museum; and That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for prominent display at the museum.
