DIGEST

Currently, the Texas Legislative Medal of Honor can only be awarded by the
governor on approval by the legislature. This prestigious honor, which has
only been bestowed once before, was established by the 58th Legislature to
recognize a member of the state military forces of Texas who bravely
performs a deed of self-sacrifice, risking one's life in a mission so
conspicuously courageous and intrepid so as to clearly distinguish the
individual above the person's comrades. First Lieutenant Jack Llewellyn
Knight has met these criteria through his actions while taking control of
the Burma Road near Loi-Kang, Burma, to stop Japanese supply movements
along that route, in 1945. The Texas Legislative Medal of Honor is the
highest commendation awarded to state military forces, and it is
appropriate to bestow this honor upon First Lieutenant Jack Llewellyn
Knight, of Troop F, 124th Cavalry Regiment of the Texas Army National
Guard.

PURPOSE

As proposed, S.C.R. 59 submits the following resolutions:

That the 76th Legislature posthumously confer the Texas Legislative Medal
of Honor on First Lieutenant Jack Llewellyn Knight in recognition of his
heroic service.

That the 76th Legislature express to the family of First Lieutenant Jack
Llewellyn Knight its deepest appreciation on behalf of all Texans.

That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the family of
First Lieutenant Jack Llewellyn Knight as an expression of highest regard.
