                                A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 1-1                                   AN ACT
 1-2     relating to contributions of and benefits for certain members of
 1-3     municipality retirement systems for fire fighters.
 1-4           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 1-5           SECTION 1.  Chapter 1268, Acts of the 75th Legislature,
 1-6     Regular Session, 1997 (Article 6243e.2(1), Vernon's Texas Civil
 1-7     Statutes), is amended by adding Section 4A to read as follows:
 1-8           Sec. 4A.  CONTRIBUTIONS OF AND BENEFITS FOR CERTAIN MEMBERS.
 1-9     (a)  Notwithstanding Section 13 of this Act, a member appointed to
1-10     the position of Fire Chief shall, after September 1, 1999, make
1-11     contributions to the fund in an amount equal to 7.7% of the highest
1-12     salary received by the member while serving in a position obtained
1-13     as a result of a competitive examination.
1-14           (b)  Notwithstanding Section 4 of this Act, for months of
1-15     participation after September 1, 1999, relating to service in the
1-16     position of Fire Chief, the fund shall compute a member's average
1-17     monthly salary as equaling one thirty-sixth of the member's salary
1-18     as a fire fighter for the member's highest 78 biweekly pay periods
1-19     during the member's service in fire fighter positions obtained as a
1-20     result of competitive examination.
1-21           SECTION 2.  This Act takes effect on June 1, 1999.
 2-1           SECTION 3.  The importance of this legislation and the
 2-2     crowded condition of the calendars in both houses create an
 2-3     emergency and an imperative public necessity that the
 2-4     constitutional rule requiring bills to be read on three several
 2-5     days in each house be suspended, and this rule is hereby suspended,
 2-6     and that this Act take effect and be in force according to its
 2-7     terms, and it is so enacted.
