                                A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 1-1                                   AN ACT
 1-2     relating to civil service status of fire fighters in certain
 1-3     cities.
 1-4           BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 1-5           SECTION 1.  Section 143.003(4), Local Government Code, is
 1-6     amended to read as follows:
 1-7                 (4)  "Fire fighter" means a member of a fire department
 1-8     who was appointed in substantial compliance with this Chapter or
 1-9     who is entitled to civil service status under Section 143.005 or
1-10     143.084.  The term includes employees [fire fighters] who perform:
1-11                       (A)  fire suppression;
1-12                       (B)  fire prevention;
1-13                       (C)  fire training;
1-14                       (D)  fire safety education;
1-15                       (E)  fire maintenance;
1-16                       (F)  fire communications;
1-17                       (G)  fire medical emergency technology;
1-18                       (H)  fire photography; [or]
1-19                       (I)  fire administration[.]; or
1-20                       (J)  fire arson investigation.
1-21           SECTION 2.  This act takes effect on September 1, 1999.
 2-1           SECTION 3.  The importance of this legislation and the
 2-2     crowded condition of the calendars in both houses create an
 2-3     emergency and an imperative public necessity that the
 2-4     constitutional rule requiring bills to be read on three several
 2-5     days in each house be suspended, and this rule is hereby suspended,
 2-6     and that this Act take effect and be in force according to its
 2-7     terms, and it is so enacted.
