Bill not drafted by TLC or Senate E&E.
                                A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 1-1 AN ACT
1-2 relating to certain diseases or illnesses suffered by a public
 1-3 safety employee.
1-4 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1-5 SECTION 1. Chapter 607, Government Code, is amended by
 1-6 adding the following:
1-7 Sec. 607.005. TUBERCULOSIS BENEFITS. The contracting of
1-8 tuberculosis shall be considered a line-of-duty illness and the
1-9 employing political subdivision shall be responsible and cover all
1-10 expenses, leave, and pay required by the public safety employee
1-11 unless clear and convincing evidence proves the public safety
1-12 employee contracted the disease otherwise.
1-13 SECTION 2. (a) This Act takes effect September 1, 1999.
1-14 (b) The changes in law made by this Act relating to
1-15 contracting tuberculosis apply only to contracting tuberculosis on
1-16 or after the effective date of this Act. Contracting tuberculosis
1-17 before the effective date of this Act is covered by the law in
1-18 effect on the date of contracting tuberculosis and that law is
1-19 continued in effect for that purpose.
1-20 SECTION 3. The importance of this legislation and the
1-21 crowded condition of the calendars in both houses create an
2-1 emergency and an imperative necessity that the constitutional rule
2-2 requiring bills to be read on three several days in each house be
2-3 suspended, and this rule is hereby suspended.
