HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, The Reverend Charles Lewis Jackson is celebrating 1-2 his 30th anniversary as pastor at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist 1-3 Church in Houston, and this auspicious occasion is truly worthy of 1-4 special recognition; and 1-5 WHEREAS, A clergyman for 37 years, Pastor Jackson received a 1-6 bachelor of theology degree from the Institutional Baptist 1-7 Theological Center, Incorporated, and was later presented an 1-8 honorary degree from Union Baptist Bible College and Seminary; for 1-9 the past three decades he has faithfully served the Christian 1-10 ministry at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church, and he has 1-11 been instrumental in that distinguished institution's spiritual and 1-12 economic growth; and 1-13 WHEREAS, He has developed, implemented, and coordinated many 1-14 of the church's innovative endeavors, including ministry programs 1-15 for television, prison and jail, bus, radio, and street, as well as 1-16 the annual prayer bowl, the Pleasant Grove Day Care Center, the 1-17 Pleasant Grove Drill Squad, the A. A. McCardell Academy, the Bible 1-18 Book Store, and the Pleasant Grove Family Life Center; this 1-19 respected clergyman is also the author of 12 ecclesiastical 1-20 publications, more than 1,100 tape recordings, and 6 live albums; 1-21 and 1-22 WHEREAS, In addition to managing the church's building 1-23 program, Pastor Jackson shares his faith as a counselor and 1-24 teacher, which includes training Sunday school teachers, deacons, 2-1 and others; he has also conducted a prayer movement in Kansas City 2-2 and Houston, taken part in a fact-finding mission to South Africa, 2-3 and studied and taught throughout the world; and 2-4 WHEREAS, This esteemed reverend is a dedicated community 2-5 leader, serving as a board member of the Harris County Houston 2-6 Sports Authority, the Texas Funeral Commission, and the Disaster 2-7 Team of the American Red Cross and as treasurer of the 2-8 African-American Religious Connection; he has also met with 2-9 President Jimmy Carter to discuss issues important to 2-10 African-American communities and participated with the National 2-11 Council of Churches in support of the Humphrey-Hawkins Bill; and 2-12 WHEREAS, Among the many honors Reverend Jackson has been 2-13 accorded are a certificate of Christian achievement from Florida 2-14 State University, a certificate of participation from the Billy 2-15 Graham Crusade, and certificates of appreciation from the City of 2-16 Houston, Harris County Commissioner Jim Fontenot, United States 2-17 Congressman George "Mickey" Leland, and Texas legislators Al 2-18 Edwards and Craig Washington; he was also featured in Marquis 2-19 Publications' "Who's Who" in Religion and the Encyclopedia of 2-20 London as the first African-American preacher to televise live from 2-21 a sanctuary; and 2-22 WHEREAS, Throughout the years, this devoted family man has 2-23 enjoyed the love and support of his wife, Bettie Edmond Jackson, 2-24 and his two children, Sheldon and Bridgette; and 2-25 WHEREAS, Pastor Jackson's outstanding leadership and strong 2-26 faith have been a tremendous source of inspiration to all those 2-27 fortunate enough to know him, and he is indeed deserving of special 3-1 legislative recognition at this time; now, therefore, be it 3-2 RESOLVED, That the 76th Legislature of the State of Texas 3-3 hereby honor Reverend Charles Lewis Jackson for his 30 years as 3-4 pastor of Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church and extend to 3-5 him sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, 3-6 be it further 3-7 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 3-8 prepared for Reverend Jackson as an expression of high regard by 3-9 the Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
