HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas Legislature is proud to join its fellow
1-2 citizens in celebration of Mount Pleasant/Titus County Day at the
1-3 State Capitol on March 23, 1999; and
1-4 WHEREAS, Located in the Pine Belt of Northeast Texas, Titus
1-5 County was created from portions of Bowie and Red River counties in
1-6 May 1846 and was organized two months later with Mount Pleasant as
1-7 its county seat; and
1-8 WHEREAS, The region once boasted a thriving timber industry,
1-9 and today it enjoys a vibrant and diversified economy based on
1-10 agribusiness, industry, tourism, and wholesale and retail trade;
1-11 and
1-12 WHEREAS, Much of the region's success is a result of the
1-13 emphasis its citizens place on providing quality education; the
1-14 Mount Pleasant Independent School District maintains an exceptional
1-15 student to teacher ratio of 13.5 to 1, and Northeast Texas
1-16 Community College, located in Mount Pleasant, is a highly respected
1-17 institution of higher learning; and
1-18 WHEREAS, Though it is a growing, modern community, Mount
1-19 Pleasant has retained its rustic charm, earning widespread acclaim
1-20 for its warm and friendly atmosphere; it has been named one of the
1-21 100 Best Small Towns in America and designated a Texas Main Street
1-22 City as well; and
1-23 WHEREAS, Visitors and residents alike enjoy exploring Titus
1-24 County's vast array of cultural and natural resources; surrounded
2-1 by Lake Bob Sandlin, Lake Cypress Springs, Lake Monticello, and
2-2 Lake Welch, Mount Pleasant is hailed as the Bass Capital of Texas,
2-3 and sports enthusiasts can hone their fishing skills and partake in
2-4 a variety of water sports at these magnificent waterways; and
2-5 WHEREAS, Individuals of all ages can enjoy many outdoor
2-6 activities throughout the year at the area's nine parks, and nature
2-7 lovers delight in viewing the area's colorful spring wildflowers
2-8 and impressive fall foliage; tourists can make their visit to the
2-9 area complete by visiting its impressive art center or by learning
2-10 more about its unique past at one of Mount Pleasant's informative
2-11 museums; and
2-12 WHEREAS, Rich in culture and tradition, Mount Pleasant and
2-13 Titus County are prosperous, forward-looking communities whose
2-14 industrious residents are leading participants in the state's
2-15 dynamic growth, and it is truly a pleasure to salute this fine
2-16 region and its people on this auspicious occasion; now, therefore,
2-17 be it
2-18 RESOLVED, That the 76th Legislature of the State of Texas
2-19 hereby designate March 23, 1999, as Mount Pleasant/Titus County Day
2-20 at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the Titus County
2-21 delegation on their visit to Austin.
