                             HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
 1-1           WHEREAS, The passing of Norman Nagle Moser of DeKalb on
 1-2     November 24, 1998, at the age of 85, brought a great loss to the
 1-3     family, many friends, and community of this esteemed gentleman; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, Mr. Moser was born in 1913 and raised on a dairy
 1-5     farm in Dallas; he studied engineering at the University of
 1-6     Cincinnati until a toboggan accident there prompted his return home
 1-7     to recover from a broken back; and
 1-8           WHEREAS, When he was able, this resilient young man attended
 1-9     a smaller school close to home while also helping look after the
1-10     Moser household in Dallas; in December of 1934 his father, then
1-11     chairman of the American Fat and Oil Association in Washington,
1-12     D.C., purchased the old Shaw Prison Farm, an expanse of land on the
1-13     Red River near DeKalb; and
1-14           WHEREAS, While the elder Mr. Moser worked in the nation's
1-15     capital, his vibrant family made the move to their new Northeast
1-16     Texas property in the spring of 1935; with fortitude and grace, the
1-17     Mosers survived the unexpected death of Mr. Moser in Washington in
1-18     July of that year; and
1-19           WHEREAS, Blessed with a courageous mother who stressed the
1-20     importance of higher education, Mr. Moser resumed his studies and
1-21     was graduated from Texas A&M in 1937; he then returned home to
1-22     shoulder his share of responsibilities there; and
1-23           WHEREAS, With adventuresome spirit, steadfast conviction, and
1-24     uncommon zest, Mr. Moser and his mother and two brothers produced
 2-1     highly regarded livestock and a bounty of crops, some of which had
 2-2     never before been attempted in the area; they also forever endeared
 2-3     themselves to the community in which they thrived; and
 2-4           WHEREAS, In 1938 Mr. Moser brought his cherished bride,
 2-5     Lollie, to the family farm and with this extraordinary woman
 2-6     enjoyed 60 years of marriage; together they raised remarkable
 2-7     children whose characters today reflect their father's many
 2-8     admirable traits; and
 2-9           WHEREAS, In 1956 Mr. Moser and his family moved from their
2-10     farm to DeKalb, the citizens of which have greatly benefited from
2-11     this outstanding person's contributions to his community; and
2-12           WHEREAS, He was an active member of the First United
2-13     Methodist Church and an ardent supporter of the area's schools,
2-14     civic organizations, businesses, and sports teams; in addition, he
2-15     was a vital participant in county, state, and national affairs; and
2-16           WHEREAS, This magnanimous Texan will long be remembered for
2-17     his intellect, his teaching, his guidance, his sense of
2-18     responsibility, and his humble respect for the dignity of every
2-19     man; and
2-20           WHEREAS, Although his presence will be deeply missed, surely
2-21     his spirit will live on in the hearts of those who were privileged
2-22     to know him; now, therefore, be it
2-23           RESOLVED, That the 76th Legislature of the State of Texas
2-24     hereby honor the memory of Norman Nagle Moser and extend utmost
2-25     sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Lollie; to his
2-26     children, Kate, Janie, and Chris; to his grandchildren; to his
2-27     great-grandchildren; and to the many other people whose lives were
 3-1     touched by this fine man; and, be it further
 3-2           RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared
 3-3     for the members of his family and that when the Texas House of
 3-4     Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in memory
 3-5     of Norman Nagle Moser.
