No. 43 76R4689 JHS-D HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, The recent passing of Ervan Chew on January 19, 1-2 1999, at the age of 42, has saddened the family and friends of this 1-3 beloved man, and we join them in mourning this tragic loss; and 1-4 WHEREAS, A graduate of the University of Houston, Mr. Chew 1-5 was a noted entrepreneur who served as president and CEO of Chew 1-6 Consulting Group and as chairman and CEO of Chew Affiliated 1-7 Industries; he was previously employed as president and senior 1-8 partner of ENC Consultants, Ltd.; and 1-9 WHEREAS, This remarkable gentleman was, however, much more 1-10 than a capable businessman, and his extraordinary legacy of civic 1-11 leadership and community participation irrefutably bears witness to 1-12 this fact; his volunteer work included various leadership roles 1-13 with the United Way of the Texas Gulf Coast, the Chinese Baptist 1-14 Church, American Youth Leadership College, and the Rotary Boys 1-15 Club, among many, many other noteworthy organizations; and 1-16 WHEREAS, In 1998, Mr. Chew received the Mayor's Volunteer 1-17 Award from the City of Houston, one of numerous awards and 1-18 accolades bestowed on him in recognition of his extensive record of 1-19 community service; he was recently selected to serve on the Girl 1-20 Scouts USA National Board of Directors, and the enthusiasm and 1-21 dedication he would undoubtedly have contributed to that group will 1-22 surely be missed; and 1-23 WHEREAS, An Eagle Scout himself, he enjoyed an association 1-24 with the Boy Scouts of America that spanned more than three decades 2-1 and was highlighted by his receipt of the Silver Beaver Award in 2-2 1986, which was presented to him by President Gerald Ford; under 2-3 Mr. Chew's guidance as scoutmaster, 24 worthy young men were 2-4 promoted to Eagle Scout status, and his longtime relationship with 2-5 that noteworthy organization endeared him to countless individuals 2-6 at the local, regional, state, and national levels; and 2-7 WHEREAS, Ervan Chew epitomized the spirit of volunteerism 2-8 through his exuberance and his tireless pursuit of excellence, and 2-9 though his loss is indeed untimely, his many contributions to his 2-10 fellow citizens are truly timeless; now, therefore, be it 2-11 RESOLVED, That the 76th Legislature of the State of Texas 2-12 hereby pay tribute to the life of Ervan Chew and extend sincere 2-13 sympathy to his wife, Mimi Kwong Chew, and to the many other 2-14 relatives and friends of this esteemed gentleman; and, be it 2-15 further 2-16 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-17 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas 2-18 House of Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in 2-19 memory of Ervan Chew.
