                             HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
 1-1           WHEREAS, Dr. Jack Christie has served the people of Texas in
 1-2     myriad ways, perhaps most notably as a member and chairman of the
 1-3     State Board of Education, and it is appropriate that he be
 1-4     recognized for his fine contributions to the Houston community and
 1-5     the State of Texas at this time; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, Dr. Christie attended Texas Chiropractic College and
 1-7     San Jacinto College after graduating from Texas City High School
 1-8     and continued his education through extension courses at Rice
 1-9     University, the University of Houston, The University of Texas, and
1-10     Cambridge University in England; and
1-11           WHEREAS, This noteworthy gentleman maintains a successful
1-12     chiropractic practice in Houston, and his dedication and commitment
1-13     to excellence earned him a gubernatorial appointment to the Texas
1-14     Board of Chiropractic Examiners, on which he served from 1981 until
1-15     1987; and
1-16           WHEREAS, Committed to excellence in education, Dr. Christie
1-17     was elected to the State Board of Education in 1990; he was
1-18     appointed chairman by Governor George W. Bush in 1995 and served in
1-19     that capacity until 1997; and
1-20           WHEREAS, Dr. Christie has also contributed to his community
1-21     as a member of the Spring Branch Memorial Chamber of Commerce Board
1-22     of Directors and the Big Brothers Board of Directors, and from 1978
1-23     until 1984 he was a board of trustees member for the Spring Branch
1-24     Independent School District, serving as president in 1983 when that
 2-1     group was named the outstanding school board in the state; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, Dr. Christie's public-spirited nature is exemplified
 2-3     by his participation in Big Brothers and his volunteer work for
 2-4     Houston public schools, and he has lent his support and aid to
 2-5     numerous fund-raising events, including the New Year's Eve Dance
 2-6     for the Houston Jaycees, an annual Christmas ice skating party for
 2-7     250 underprivileged children, and the Annual Toast and Roast, a
 2-8     benefit for Big Brothers; and
 2-9           WHEREAS, Dr. Christie received the Leadership Award from the
2-10     Houston Jaycees in 1973 and Warner Cable's 1997 Hometown Hero
2-11     Award; he was listed in Who's Who in the Southwest in 1975 and was
2-12     named one of the Outstanding Young Men of America in 1976; and
2-13           WHEREAS, Outside the rigorous demands of his career and in
2-14     addition to his community involvement, Dr. Christie is an avid
2-15     athlete, having completed the Boston, Honolulu, and Houston
2-16     marathons and having finished the Ironman World Triathlon in 1982;
2-17     he is an active member of St. Cyril's Catholic Church and has been
2-18     a Sunday school instructor for eight years; and
2-19           WHEREAS, Throughout his years of service to his community,
2-20     his city, and his state, Dr. Christie has been supported by a
2-21     loving family that includes his wife, Meliane Wells Christie, and
2-22     his children, John, Katherine, and Patrick, and it is indeed a
2-23     privilege to honor him for his many contributions to his fellow
2-24     citizens at this time; now, therefore, be it
2-25           RESOLVED, That the 76th Legislature of the State of Texas
2-26     hereby commend Dr.  Jack Christie for his fine work in behalf of
2-27     the citizens of Texas and extend to him sincere best wishes for
 3-1     continued success and happiness in the years to come; and, be it
 3-2     further
 3-3           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 3-4     prepared for Dr. Christie as an expression of high regard by the
 3-5     Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
