                             HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
 1-1           WHEREAS, Teaching children to act safely around firearms is a
 1-2     critical step in the effort to reduce the number of firearm-related
 1-3     accidents among our nation's young people; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, The Eddie Eagle Gun Safety Program teaches the
 1-5     fundamentals of firearm safety to elementary school-aged children
 1-6     in an effective and enjoyable way, communicating to them the
 1-7     lifesaving message that when they see a gun they should stop,
 1-8     immediately leave the area, and tell an adult; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, Literature and teaching materials from this
1-10     nationally recognized program are widely available to schools and
1-11     police departments throughout the United States; since 1988, more
1-12     than 8,000 public and private schools and 2,500 law enforcement
1-13     agencies have relayed the program's valuable message to 6.5 million
1-14     children in America; and
1-15           WHEREAS, House Concurrent Resolution 24 adopted by the 73rd
1-16     Legislature of the State of Texas encouraged the Texas Education
1-17     Agency to promote the use of the National Rifle Association's Eddie
1-18     Eagle Gun Safety Program in our schools, and the importance of
1-19     continuing the positive efforts of this vital program cannot be
1-20     overstated; now, therefore, be it
1-21           RESOLVED, That the 76th Legislature of the State of Texas
1-22     hereby declare the week of October 18-22, 1999, as Children's
1-23     Firearm Safety Week and encourage all citizens of the State of
1-24     Texas to support the National Rifle Association's Eddie Eagle Gun
 2-1     Safety Program in promoting children's firearm safety in Texas.
