No. 58 76R5378 GMW-D HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, Students from South Texas College of Law have 1-2 brought honor to their school by winning the national championship 1-3 trophy at the 49th Annual National Moot Court Competition, and this 1-4 outstanding accomplishment is truly worthy of special praise; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Affiliated with Texas A&M University, South Texas 1-6 College of Law emerged victorious for the second time in five years 1-7 in this annual event sponsored by the Association of the Bar of the 1-8 City of New York and the American College of Trial Lawyers; and 1-9 WHEREAS, The competition began with 205 teams from 144 law 1-10 schools, with only 28 advancing to the national finals held in New 1-11 York City; before defeating The University of Texas School of Law 1-12 in the championship round, South Texas College of Law bested teams 1-13 from the University of Nebraska, Williamette University, the 1-14 University of Kansas, Georgia State University, and Southwestern 1-15 College of Los Angeles; and 1-16 WHEREAS, A panel of judges from the 2nd Circuit, federal, and 1-17 New York Court of Appeals officiated the final contest and they 1-18 presented the South Texas College of Law team with five awards, 1-19 including the Russell J. Coffin Fund Award, the John C. Knox Award, 1-20 the American College of Trial Lawyers Award, and the WESTLAW Award; 1-21 and 1-22 WHEREAS, This triumphant team consisted of Twila Grooms, who 1-23 received the Marian and Bernard Botein Award as the individual best 1-24 advocate, Brent Cordell, and Kevin Cain; they were ably prepared 2-1 for this demanding event by their coach, Professor T. Gerald 2-2 Treece, assisted by former national champion advocates Rob 2-3 Galloway, Mary-Olga Ferguson, and Sean Breen; and 2-4 WHEREAS, The dedicated members of the South Texas College of 2-5 Law team have distinguished themselves as formidable litigators, 2-6 and for claiming the national championship trophy at the 49th 2-7 Annual National Moot Court Competition they have achieved a feat 2-8 that is indeed worthy of recognition; now, therefore, be it 2-9 RESOLVED, That the 76th Legislature of the State of Texas 2-10 hereby honor the members of the South Texas College of Law team for 2-11 earning first place at the 49th Annual National Moot Court 2-12 Competition and extend to them sincere best wishes for continued 2-13 success in the years to come; and, be it further 2-14 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-15 prepared for the South Texas College of Law team as a token of high 2-16 regard by the Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
