HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
1-1 WHEREAS, The members of the Texas Legislature are proud to
1-2 join the citizens of Snyder in the celebration of Snyder Day at the
1-3 State Capitol on February 24, 1999, and this festive event offers
1-4 an ideal opportunity to recognize the community's many unique
1-5 attributes; and
1-6 WHEREAS, Located deep in the heart of West Texas, the "Land
1-7 of the White Buffalo" is noted for its Western heritage and the
1-8 pioneer spirit of its residents; it serves as the county seat of
1-9 Scurry County, which was named by the Texas Legislature in 1876 for
1-10 Confederate hero General William R. Scurry; and
1-11 WHEREAS, Scurry County traditionally has been one of the
1-12 state's leading oil producers, and its wells have supplied more
1-13 than 1 billion barrels of oil to date; it is also the location of
1-14 the SACROC unit, one of the most prolific oil producing areas of
1-15 the state; and
1-16 WHEREAS, Snyder's outstanding civic leaders and dynamic
1-17 citizenry have generated significant economic growth; Arnold
1-18 Lorber, a leader in the textile industry, has chosen Snyder as the
1-19 site of a Lorber Industries of Texas manufacturing facility that
1-20 will have a major impact on the economy both locally and statewide,
1-21 as the project will purchase cotton from distributors throughout
1-22 Texas; and
1-23 WHEREAS, The significant financial investment in land
1-24 development, construction payroll, and training needed both on site
2-1 and off have also led to the formation of a strong working
2-2 partnership between Lorber Industries of Texas and Western Texas
2-3 College of Snyder; and
2-4 WHEREAS, A strong presence in the community since 1971,
2-5 Western Texas College offers a full range of both academic and
2-6 vocational classes and also provides specialized training through
2-7 its newly formed Workforce Development Program, made possible in
2-8 part by the Texas Workforce Commission and the Texas Department of
2-9 Economic Development; and
2-10 WHEREAS, Snyder is also home to the Price Daniel Unit of the
2-11 Texas Department of Criminal Justice, one of the first such units
2-12 to be located in West Texas; and
2-13 WHEREAS, A long-standing source of community pride for its
2-14 scholastic and athletic programs is the Snyder Independent School
2-15 System, which has been recognized nationally for its outstanding
2-16 high school drama and vocational agriculture departments; and
2-17 WHEREAS, The continued progress and growth of Snyder is
2-18 enhanced by the cooperation of city and county leadership, by the
2-19 progressive spirit of the community's residents, and by its rich
2-20 natural and cultural resources, and it is a pleasure to salute this
2-21 fine Texas city at this time; now, therefore, be it
2-22 RESOLVED, That the 76th Legislature of the State of Texas
2-23 hereby officially commemorate Snyder Day at the State Capitol,
2-24 formally recognize the community of Snyder as the "Land of the
2-25 White Buffalo," and extend to those residents visiting on this day
2-26 best wishes for a memorable trip to the Capitol City; and, be it
2-27 further
3-1 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3-2 prepared for the Snyder delegation as an expression of high regard
3-3 by the Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
