HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
 1-1           WHEREAS, Many proud citizens of Tyler will gather in Austin
 1-2     on March 8 and 9, 1999, to celebrate Tyler Days at the State
 1-3     Capitol, and this special occasion offers an excellent opportunity
 1-4     to pay tribute to this noteworthy city and its residents; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, Chartered in 1847 and named for President John
 1-6     Tyler, this picturesque city is located in Smith County and has
 1-7     long enjoyed its well-deserved reputation as one of the jewels of
 1-8     East Texas' Piney Woods region; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, Tyler has been blessed with a wealth of natural
1-10     resources, and for many years the city's local economy was
1-11     supported by such agricultural products as cotton, strawberries,
1-12     and peaches; in 1902, however, a devastating peach blight led
1-13     farmers to begin growing what has become the city's most well-known
1-14     export, the celebrated Tyler Rose; and
1-15           WHEREAS, This famous flower has become synonymous with
1-16     excellence in horticultural circles and among gardening
1-17     aficionados, and its numerous varieties can be viewed and enjoyed
1-18     annually at the Texas Rose Festival or year-round at the
1-19     world-renowned Municipal Rose Garden and Museum; and
1-20           WHEREAS, Today, Tyler's economy relies on the strength of the
1-21     petroleum, timber, and manufacturing industries, while the city has
1-22     also established itself as the home of numerous state-of-the-art
1-23     health care facilities; and
1-24           WHEREAS, Tyler boasts several outstanding colleges and
 2-1     universities, including Texas College, The University of Texas at
 2-2     Tyler, and Tyler Junior College, and the city's excellent public
 2-3     school system attests to the importance that residents place on
 2-4     education; and
 2-5           WHEREAS, Among the many recreational options found within the
 2-6     city are the Carnegie History Center, the Hudnall Planetarium, the
 2-7     Tyler Museum of Art, and the Caldwell Zoo; Tyler is also a haven
 2-8     for outdoor activities, such as hunting, fishing, and boating,
 2-9     which are enjoyed by visitors and residents alike; and
2-10           WHEREAS, The citizens of Tyler are justifiably proud of their
2-11     city, with its strong historical ties and prosperous future, and it
2-12     is indeed a pleasure to pay tribute to these individuals as they
2-13     celebrate their shared heritage and continue to strive toward
2-14     achieving their common goals; now, therefore, be it
2-15           RESOLVED, That the 76th Legislature of the State of Texas
2-16     hereby recognize March 8 and 9, 1999, as Tyler Days at the State
2-17     Capitol and extend a warm welcome to those individuals who have
2-18     traveled to the Capitol City to celebrate this unique occasion;
2-19     and, be it further
2-20           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-21     prepared for prominent display in the city of Tyler as an
2-22     expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives and
2-23     Senate.
