HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, On March 1, 1999, many proud residents of Waco will 1-2 celebrate the city's 150th anniversary, and this auspicious 1-3 occasion is truly worthy of special recognition; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Located in the Brazos River Valley, Waco was 1-5 initially a frontier town, and as the site of the first pedestrian 1-6 and wagon suspension bridge to cross the Brazos River, it was once 1-7 a major thoroughfare for cowboys and their herds on the Chisholm 1-8 Trail; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Railroads reached Waco in the 1870s, transforming it 1-10 into a hub of commerce and one of the world's leading producers of 1-11 cotton; today the city features modern industry and is an 1-12 educational, cultural, and recreational mecca whose citizens still 1-13 value the pioneer heritage of their forebears; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Rich in tradition and history, Waco is the site of 1-15 Baylor University, the oldest continuously operated university in 1-16 the Lone Star State, and many fine museums, historic homes, and 1-17 parks; the city's diverse attractions include the Texas Ranger Hall 1-18 of Fame, Dr Pepper Museum, Cameron Park, Indian Spring Park, the 1-19 Helen Marie Taylor Museum, and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame; and 1-20 WHEREAS, While the residents of Waco may look back with 1-21 justifiable pride on their community's unique history, they may 1-22 also look forward with optimism to a bright future, and it is most 1-23 fitting at this time to pay tribute to this remarkable city and its 1-24 dynamic citizenry; now, therefore, be it 2-1 RESOLVED, That the 76th Legislature of the State of Texas 2-2 hereby commemorate the city of Waco's 150th anniversary and extend 2-3 to its citizens sincere best wishes for continued success and 2-4 happiness; and, be it further 2-5 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-6 prepared for prominent display in Waco as an expression of high 2-7 regard by the Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
