                             HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
 1-1           WHEREAS, The contributions of the senior citizens of Texas
 1-2     cannot be overstated, for their experience and wisdom are vital to
 1-3     the future  of the Lone Star State; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, Preparing for these citizens'  future requirements
 1-5     is a pressing issue for this state and nation, for the number of
 1-6     elderly Texans will continue to rise as life expectancy is extended
 1-7     and the postwar baby boom crests; and
 1-8           WHEREAS, The global ratio of elderly to newborn projected for
 1-9     the year 2020 is 15-to-1, with an accompanying rise in needs and
1-10     resources that must be met; one group that deserves much praise for
1-11     its efforts to draw attention to these issues is the Midlothian
1-12     Middle School Eighth Grade Community Service Problem Solving Team
1-13     and its "Project: S.E.N.I.O.R.S.--Supporting Elders' Needs In Our
1-14     Rising Society"; and
1-15           WHEREAS, Begun by a dedicated and concerned group of students
1-16     under the direction of Beth Van Amburgh, the project raises
1-17     community awareness of the needs of senior citizens, fosters
1-18     stronger relationships and understanding between young people and
1-19     the elderly, and assists in raising funds to help this valuable
1-20     population; and
1-21           WHEREAS, Project: S.E.N.I.O.R.S. has prompted Midlothian
1-22     Mayor Maurice Osborn to declare April 10, 1999, as Senior Citizens'
1-23     Day in Midlothian, and it is indeed a pleasure to join those
1-24     citizens in paying tribute to this noteworthy segment of our
 2-1     state's population; now, therefore, be it
 2-2           RESOLVED, That the 76th Legislature of the State of Texas
 2-3     hereby declare April 10, 1999, Senior Citizens' Day in Texas and
 2-4     encourage its observance in communities across the state; and, be
 2-5     it further
 2-6           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 2-7     prepared for prominent display at Midlothian Middle School to honor
 2-8     the members of the Eighth Grade Community Service Problem Solving
 2-9     Team for their forward-looking efforts.
