No. 124 1-2 (In the Senate - Received from the House May 12, 1999; 1-3 May 12, 1999, read first time and referred to Committee on 1-4 Administration; May 14, 1999, reported favorably by the following 1-5 vote: Yeas 3, Nays 0; May 14, 1999, sent to printer.) 1-6 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-7 WHEREAS, The Asian Cultures Museum & Educational Center is 1-8 truly a unique resource that has benefited the citizens of Corpus 1-9 Christi for nearly a quarter of a century, and its long-standing 1-10 service to both residents and visitors of Texas alike is indeed 1-11 deserving of special legislative recognition; and 1-12 WHEREAS, Founded in 1974 by Mrs. Billie Trimble Chandler, the 1-13 museum houses one of the finest and most extensive collections of 1-14 Asian artifacts in the United States and is the only gallery of its 1-15 kind in Texas; its operation is financed only through the generous 1-16 support of its patrons within the community, and the facility does 1-17 not receive any state appropriations; and 1-18 WHEREAS, The majority of the museum's outstanding collection 1-19 was brought from Japan to America in the 1950s, and the facility's 1-20 numerous exhibits also include exquisite pieces from China, Korea, 1-21 India, the Philippines, Vietnam, and the countries of Southeast 1-22 Asia; and 1-23 WHEREAS, Many individuals have devoted their time and energy 1-24 to the success of the museum, and the Asian Cultures Museum & 1-25 Educational Center continues to serve a vital role in the Corpus 1-26 Christi community, providing an invaluable resource for increasing 1-27 public awareness of the countries of Asia and their peoples; now, 1-28 therefore, be it 1-29 RESOLVED, That the 76th Legislature of the State of Texas 1-30 hereby designate Corpus Christi's Asian Cultures Museum & 1-31 Educational Center the Official State Museum of Asian Cultures; 1-32 and, be it further 1-33 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 1-34 prepared for prominent display in the museum as an expression of 1-35 high regard by the Texas House of Representatives and Senate. 1-36 * * * * *
