                             HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
 1-1           WHEREAS, The history of the Texas Navy dates back to November
 1-2     25, 1835, when the provisional government of the Republic of Texas
 1-3     established that branch of its armed forces in an effort to protect
 1-4     and preserve the independence of the young republic; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, The First Texas Navy distinguished itself by handing
 1-6     a series of defeats to the larger and better-equipped Mexican Navy,
 1-7     playing a critical role in the Battle of San Jacinto by denying
 1-8     much-needed supplies to the Mexican Army in 1836; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, Three years later, the Second Texas Navy, under the
1-10     command of Commodore Edwin Ward Moore, helped to prevent a
1-11     threatened Mexican invasion of Texas, thus ensuring that the
1-12     Republic of Texas could continue in its development toward
1-13     statehood; and
1-14           WHEREAS, On April 21, 1958, the Third Texas Navy was
1-15     established by Governor Price Daniel, Sr., as a patriotic
1-16     organization dedicated to preserving the memory and heritage of the
1-17     Texas Navy and the many brave individuals associated with that
1-18     esteemed military branch; and
1-19           WHEREAS, The Texas Navy, Inc., was chartered on October 10,
1-20     1972, to serve as the voluntary association charged with the
1-21     preservation and promotion of the history and traditions of the
1-22     Texas Navy, and that association remains in existence today as a
1-23     tribute to those deserving persons who have been commissioned by
1-24     the governor as "Admirals in the Texas Navy"; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, Throughout its various incarnations, the Texas Navy
 2-2     has consistently upheld the high standards of the citizens of the
 2-3     Lone Star State, and its record of distinguished service in times
 2-4     of war and in times of peace is truly exemplary; now, therefore, be
 2-5     it
 2-6           RESOLVED, That the 76th Legislature of the State of Texas
 2-7     hereby designate the Texas Navy, Inc., as the voluntary association
 2-8     of the "Admirals in the Texas Navy" and pay tribute to this
 2-9     noteworthy organization and its members; and, be it further
2-10           RESOLVED, That the secretary of state forward an official
2-11     copy of this resolution to the Office of the Governor for
2-12     distribution to each person so honored.
