HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, The passing of Dr. Fermin Calderon on January 29, 1-2 1998, at the age of 68, has brought a great loss to the Del Rio 1-3 community and the State of Texas; and 1-4 WHEREAS, A native of Mexico City, Dr. Calderon became an 1-5 Eagle Scout as a young man and went on to serve his country in the 1-6 United States Army during the Berlin Airlift; after completing his 1-7 military service, he was graduated from The University of Texas at 1-8 Austin and went on to earn a medical degree from The University of 1-9 Texas Medical Branch at Galveston in 1955; and 1-10 WHEREAS, This respected physician helped to establish the 1-11 State Health and Immunizations Clinic in Del Rio and further 1-12 assisted in the operation of other area clinics; he was honored for 1-13 his exceptional service when the American G.I. Forum presented him 1-14 with its Humanitarian Award in 1969; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Aside from his medical contributions, Dr. Calderon 1-16 served his fellow citizens through his work with a host of other 1-17 significant initiatives; he secured construction of a federal 1-18 housing project in the San Felipe area during the early 1960s and 1-19 also demonstrated his commitment to the youth of the community both 1-20 as a member of the local school board and as an ardent supporter of 1-21 Pee Wee Football teams; and 1-22 WHEREAS, Dr. Calderon was a member of the Val Verde County 1-23 Selective Service Board and held leadership posts with the American 1-24 G.I. Forum at the state and local levels, and in working with the 2-1 United States Department of Labor to develop the Veterans Outreach 2-2 Program, he greatly enhanced educational opportunities for many 2-3 people; and 2-4 WHEREAS, He was feted with numerous accolades for his 2-5 outstanding civic and professional contributions; in addition to 2-6 being chosen Physician of the Year in 1991 and earning special 2-7 recognition for community service from Del Rio Mayor Alfredo 2-8 Gutierrez, Jr., he was duly honored when a local elementary school 2-9 was named for him in January 1994; and 2-10 WHEREAS, Dr. Fermin Calderon enhanced the quality of life in 2-11 the Del Rio community in countless ways, and the first anniversary 2-12 of his passing provides a fitting opportunity to reflect on his 2-13 many good deeds; now, therefore, be it 2-14 RESOLVED, That the 76th Legislature of the State of Texas 2-15 hereby pay tribute to the life of Dr. Fermin Calderon and extend 2-16 sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his sons and 2-17 daughters-in-law, Fermin and Gloria Calderon, Hector and Amanda 2-18 Calderon, and Albert and Santa Calderon; to his sisters, Maria 2-19 Elena C. Ramirez and Guadalupe Mendoza; to his brothers, Guillermo 2-20 Calderon, Eulalio C. Calderon, Jr., and Julio Calderon; to his 2-21 aunts and uncles, Mr. and Mrs. Julio C. Ramos and Mr. and 2-22 Mrs. Carlos Calderon; and to his grandchildren, Fermin Calderon, 2-23 Vanessa Calderon, Leah Calderon, Hector Calderon, Albert Calderon, 2-24 Katherine Calderon, and Alexandria Calderon; and, be it further 2-25 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-26 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas 2-27 House of Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in 3-1 memory of Dr. Fermin Calderon.
