No. 138 76R9422 GMW-D HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, The Friendswood High School Academic Decathlon team 1-2 has won the Texas Academic Decathlon competition for the seventh 1-3 consecutive year, and this outstanding accomplishment is indeed 1-4 worthy of special recognition; and 1-5 WHEREAS, The Academic Decathlon was created in 1968 to 1-6 recognize excellence in academic achievement, challenging students 1-7 in a variety of subjects, including mathematics, science, social 1-8 studies, economics, fine arts, language, and grammar; each 1-9 nine-member team is equally divided into Honors, Scholastic, and 1-10 Varsity divisions, providing for a broad range of academic 1-11 backgrounds; and 1-12 WHEREAS, Competing in the medium school division, the 1-13 Friendswood High School team not only won the state championship, 1-14 but also won first place in the Super Quiz Competition, as well as 1-15 $13,250 in scholarships and a phenomenal total of 44 individual 1-16 medals; and 1-17 WHEREAS, The team was ably prepared for this mentally 1-18 demanding event by its coaches, Renae Simons and Mary Rinehart, 1-19 both teachers at Friendswood High School; among the team's standout 1-20 competitors were Sajid Anjum, who captured the first place overall 1-21 title, second place finisher Joan Allen, and Sunishka Wimalawansa, 1-22 who took third place; and 1-23 WHEREAS, The other talented members of the Friendswood team 1-24 include Sara Staggs, the first place winner in the scholastic 2-1 division, Andrew Lau, Michael Melgares, Thomas Cunningham, Russell 2-2 Bowie, Brian Herbert, and team manager Justin Figueroa; and 2-3 WHEREAS, The determination and academic excellence 2-4 demonstrated by all the members of the Friendswood team are truly 2-5 commendable, and it is most fitting that we commend them as they 2-6 celebrate their latest Texas Academic Decathlon title; now, 2-7 therefore, be it 2-8 RESOLVED, That the 76th Legislature of the State of Texas 2-9 hereby congratulate the members of the Friendswood High School 2-10 Academic Decathlon team on winning their seventh consecutive state 2-11 championship and extend to them sincere best wishes for continued 2-12 success and happiness; and, be it further 2-13 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-14 prepared for the Friendswood High School Academic Decathlon team as 2-15 an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives 2-16 and Senate.
