HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
 1-1           WHEREAS, The passing of Dr. William C. Leavitt on May 30,
 1-2     1997, at the age of 71, brought a great loss to the many friends
 1-3     and relatives of this esteemed educator; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, A native of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Dr. Leavitt
 1-5     served his nation with distinction as a member of the U.S. Army Air
 1-6     Corps from 1944 to 1947; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, After completing his military service, he attended
 1-8     Middle Tennessee State University, where he earned his bachelor's
 1-9     and master's degrees, and he later attended the University of North
1-10     Texas, attaining his doctorate in education from that respected
1-11     institution; and
1-12           WHEREAS, During his tenure at Middle Tennessee State
1-13     University, he worked with legendary rocket pioneer Dr. Werner von
1-14     Braun creating models of a space station and three-stage rocket
1-15     that were later displayed in New York City and  were also used for
1-16     artist's conceptions in Collier's magazine; and
1-17           WHEREAS, Dr. Leavitt joined the staff of Sul Ross State
1-18     University in 1956 as a professor with the Industrial Technology
1-19     Department; he later served as chair of the department and retired
1-20     in 1991 as professor emeritus; and
1-21           WHEREAS, William Leavitt was a man of rare dedication and
1-22     integrity; although his warmth and wisdom are deeply missed, his
1-23     remarkable spirit surely lives on in the hearts of the many people
1-24     whose lives he touched during his time on this earth; now,
 2-1     therefore, be it
 2-2           RESOLVED, That the 76th Legislature of the State of Texas
 2-3     hereby pay tribute to the life of Dr. William C. Leavitt and extend
 2-4     sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, Dorothy
 2-5     Marlin Leavitt; to his sons and daughters-in-law, George and Hallie
 2-6     Leavitt, Billy and Debi Leavitt, and John and Carla Leavitt; to his
 2-7     brother, George Leavitt; to his sister, Jeanne Koone; to his seven
 2-8     grandchildren; and to the many other friends and relatives of this
 2-9     beloved gentleman; and, be it further
2-10           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-11     prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
2-12     House of Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in
2-13     memory of Dr. William C. Leavitt.
