HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
 1-1           WHEREAS, Great value is placed on the education of the
 1-2     children of Texas, for in their hands lies the future of the Lone
 1-3     Star State, and they must be fully equipped with relevant skills
 1-4     and experiences to meet the challenges of the 21st century; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, Such success would not be possible without the
 1-6     commitment and enthusiasm of dedicated teachers, and the 1999
 1-7     honorees for the Texas Excellence Awards for Outstanding Teachers
 1-8     are such people; and
 1-9           WHEREAS, These fine educators include three recipients of the
1-10     Lillian B. Rhodes Teaching Award:  Linda Keefer of Arlington High
1-11     School in Arlington, Katherine Powdrell of Friendswood High School
1-12     in Friendswood, and Marty Walker of H. Grady Spruce High School in
1-13     Dallas; and three recipients of the Bernard and Audre Rapoport
1-14     Teaching Award:  James Buchanan of Communications Arts High School
1-15     in San Antonio, Dixie Ross of Taylor High School in Taylor, and Joe
1-16     D. Trevino, Jr., of Bishop High School in Bishop; and
1-17           WHEREAS, Other honorees include the Glaxo Teaching Award
1-18     recipient, Roy Baldwin of John Marshall High School in San Antonio;
1-19     the Gordon Appleman Teaching Award recipient, Gary Hicks of Dunbar
1-20     High School in Fort Worth; the Houston Texas Exes Teaching Award
1-21     recipient, Genevieve Lesieux of Jesse H.  Jones High School in
1-22     Houston; the Mrs. Harold Myers Teaching Award recipient, Carolyn
1-23     Woodul of James Martin High School in Arlington; the Verna Rogers
1-24     Teaching Award recipient, Judy Howard of T. A. Brown Elementary
 2-1     School in Austin; and the Carolyn and Mario Benitez Teacher Award
 2-2     recipient, LaVonne Danielson of Joe Dan Mills, Jr., Elementary
 2-3     School in Austin; and
 2-4           WHEREAS, These teachers are all highly regarded professionals
 2-5     who have earned recognition from their peers for their proven
 2-6     ability to motivate students and for their instructional expertise
 2-7     and the cooperative manner in which they work with their colleagues
 2-8     and members of the administration; and
 2-9           WHEREAS, Recipients of these awards were selected from a
2-10     large and talented field of entrants after being nominated by their
2-11     principals; for receiving this award they were entitled to attend
2-12     the 1999 Conference on Texas Excellence on Education at The
2-13     University of Texas at Austin, where each was presented with a
2-14     $1,000 award and a specially commissioned bronze sculpture; and
2-15           WHEREAS, Now in its 13th year, the Texas Excellence Awards
2-16     program is presented by The University of Texas at Austin's College
2-17     of Education and The University of Texas Ex-Students' Association;
2-18     as a recipient of a Texas Excellence Award, each of these educators
2-19     has achieved a rare distinction and for that honor they are truly
2-20     deserving of special legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it
2-21           RESOLVED, That the 76th Legislature of the State of Texas
2-22     hereby commend the recipients of the 1999 Texas Excellence Awards
2-23     for Outstanding Teachers and extend to them sincere best wishes for
2-24     success and happiness in the years to come; and, be it further
2-25           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-26     prepared for these dedicated teachers as an expression of high
2-27     regard by the Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
