By Gallego H.C.R. No. 165 76R296 JHS-D HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, The passing of renowned archaeologist and 1-2 ethnologist J. Charles Kelley on December 13, 1997, at the age of 1-3 84, brought a great loss to the family and many friends of this 1-4 remarkable gentleman; and 1-5 WHEREAS, A native of Era, Texas, Dr. Kelley grew up in 1-6 Balmorhea and attended the former Sul Ross State Teachers College; 1-7 he later earned a bachelor's degree in anthropology from the 1-8 University of New Mexico and a doctoral degree in American 1-9 archaeology and ethnology from Harvard University; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Best known for his pioneering studies in Trans-Pecos 1-11 Texas and northwestern Mexico, Dr. Kelley was revered in 1-12 archaeological circles throughout North America as a scholar, 1-13 teacher, and author; he was an officer and board member of many 1-14 prestigious organizations, including the American Anthropological 1-15 Association and the Society for American Archaeology, which honored 1-16 him with its 50th anniversary award, and he was named the recipient 1-17 of the Texas Award for Historic Preservation in 1986; and 1-18 WHEREAS, An adjunct professor at Sul Ross State University 1-19 and The University of Texas at El Paso following his retirement in 1-20 1977, Dr. Kelley also taught at The University of Texas at Austin 1-21 and Southern Illinois University at Carbondale over the course of 1-22 his career; he further served as curator of the Museum of the Big 1-23 Bend and the Anthropology Museum at The University of Texas at 1-24 Austin and as director of the University Museum at Southern 2-1 Illinois University; and 2-2 WHEREAS, Dr. Kelley's dedication to the study of archaeology 2-3 and ethnohistory earned him the respect and admiration of his 2-4 students and colleagues, and his many contributions to the 2-5 preservation of the history of West Texas, the American Southwest, 2-6 and Northwest Mexico will undoubtedly ensure that he and his work 2-7 will not soon be forgotten; now, therefore, be it 2-8 RESOLVED, That the 76th Legislature of the State of Texas 2-9 hereby pay tribute to the life of J. Charles Kelley and extend 2-10 heartfelt sympathy to his wife, Ellen Abbott Kelley, and to the 2-11 many other relatives and friends of this fine man; and, be it 2-12 further 2-13 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-14 prepared for the members of his family, and that when the Texas 2-15 House of Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in 2-16 memory of J. Charles Kelley.
