                             HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
 1-1           WHEREAS, The passing of Mary E. Dunlap on January 28, 1998,
 1-2     at the age of 77, brought a great loss to the many friends and
 1-3     relatives of this esteemed Alpine resident; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, Born June 16, 1920, in San Antonio, she relocated
 1-5     with her family to Alpine and pursued her higher education at Sul
 1-6     Ross State University, attaining her degree from that respected
 1-7     institution; and
 1-8           WHEREAS, She was married to Ralph E. Dunlap, Sr., in 1942 and
 1-9     together they shared 36 happy and rewarding years of marriage until
1-10     his passing in 1978; and
1-11           WHEREAS, During World War II, Mrs. Dunlap served the war
1-12     effort as a telegrapher for the Southern Pacific Railroad; in 1950
1-13     she began an exemplary career as a classroom teacher that spanned
1-14     46 years and her tireless dedication to the cause of learning
1-15     earned her "Teacher of the Year" honors in 1968; and
1-16           WHEREAS, She was also a member of the American Legion
1-17     Auxiliary, Unit Number 79, and served as that organization's
1-18     chaplain for more than two decades; in recognition of her
1-19     contributions, she was named ALA Member of the Year in the State of
1-20     Texas for 1991-1992; and
1-21           WHEREAS, Mary E. Dunlap was a woman of rare generosity and
1-22     dedication; although her warmth and wisdom have been greatly
1-23     missed, her remarkable spirit surely lives on in the hearts of the
1-24     many people whose lives she touched during her time on this earth;
 2-1     now, therefore, be it
 2-2           RESOLVED, That the 76th Legislature of the State of Texas
 2-3     hereby pay tribute to the life of Mary E. Dunlap and extend sincere
 2-4     sympathy to the members of her family: to her daughter, Rutha; to
 2-5     her brother, Jesse; to her grandchildren, David, Luke, and Erin; to
 2-6     her great-grandchildren, Courtney and Calvin; and to the many other
 2-7     friends and relatives of this beloved woman; and, be it further
 2-8           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 2-9     prepared for the members of her family and that when the Texas
2-10     House of Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in
2-11     her memory.
