HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
1-1 WHEREAS, The recent passing of Dr. Jim Richerson on March 1,
1-2 1999, at the age of 55, has brought a great loss to the family,
1-3 friends, and community of this respected Sul Ross State University
1-4 professor; and
1-5 WHEREAS, Born on September 22, 1943, in Bossier City,
1-6 Louisiana, to Jarvis and Mayre Richerson, this noted entomologist
1-7 received a bachelor of arts degree and a master of science degree
1-8 from the University of Missouri at Columbia and a Ph.D. from Simon
1-9 Fraser University in Vancouver, British Columbia; and
1-10 WHEREAS, Dr. Richerson joined the faculty at Sul Ross State
1-11 University in 1979, and over the course of his accomplished 20-year
1-12 tenure, he taught undergraduate and graduate classes, advised
1-13 biology majors, and participated in numerous research projects in
1-14 addition to serving as biology department chair since 1997; and
1-15 WHEREAS, Before he began his illustrious career with the
1-16 university, Dr. Richerson worked as a research associate for Penn
1-17 State University, as a lab technician with the USDA Bio-Control
1-18 Research Lab in Columbia, Missouri, and at Texas A&M University,
1-19 where he completed three years of postgraduate work; and
1-20 WHEREAS, Well known for his wit, good humor, and willingness
1-21 to listen to students and colleagues, Dr. Richerson was regarded as
1-22 a teacher who challenged his students to succeed and who helped to
1-23 make Sul Ross State University a campus that focused on students'
1-24 needs; and
2-1 WHEREAS, A devoted family man as well, he enjoyed a 33-year
2-2 marriage with his wife, Barbara, and together they raised a
2-3 daughter, Tara, with whom they created cherished family memories;
2-4 and
2-5 WHEREAS, Dr. Jim Richerson was a leading member of the Sul
2-6 Ross community, and though his wisdom and guidance will be greatly
2-7 missed, his unique spirit will surely live on for many years to
2-8 come in the hearts of all those who were privileged to know him;
2-9 now, therefore, be it
2-10 RESOLVED, That the 76th Legislature of the State of Texas
2-11 hereby pay tribute to the life of Dr. Jim Richerson and extend
2-12 sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife,
2-13 Barbara Richerson; to his daughter and son-in-law, Tara and Charles
2-14 Platten; to his mother, Mayre Richerson; to his aunts and uncles,
2-15 Lee Hart, Pat and Bob Ray, Betty and Bill Cox, and Elsa and Frank
2-16 Buchner; and to the many other relatives and friends of this
2-17 beloved gentleman; and, be it further
2-18 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-19 prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
2-20 House of Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in
2-21 memory of Dr. Jim Richerson.
