                             HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
 1-1           WHEREAS, From May 17-22, 1999, the citizens of Clear Lake,
 1-2     Texas, and the surrounding area, will welcome the United Kingdom
 1-3     Trade Mission to Clear Lake, and this noteworthy international
 1-4     event is truly deserving of special recognition; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, The International Development Council of the Clear
 1-6     Lake Area Economic Development Foundation is working in tandem with
 1-7     the United Kingdom Department of Trade and Industry and the Office
 1-8     of the British Consulate-General Houston to encourage the growth of
 1-9     this cooperative trade and industry initiative; and
1-10           WHEREAS, In bringing personnel of the United Kingdom's finest
1-11     science and technology businesses to meet with America's best in
1-12     the technology-rich Clear Lake area, organizers hope to create a
1-13     global cooperative effort to explore international and intercompany
1-14     joint business ventures; and
1-15           WHEREAS, The Clear Lake area of Texas is home to the National
1-16     Aeronautics and Space Administration Johnson Space Center, making
1-17     it the international nexus for the human exploration of space; and
1-18           WHEREAS, Renowned for its heritage in science and technology,
1-19     Clear Lake is known as "The Community That Landed Humankind on the
1-20     Moon," and its neighbor, the city of Houston, takes pride in the
1-21     fact that when the words "Houston, the Eagle has landed" were
1-22     broadcast from the moon, that city's name became the first word
1-23     ever spoken from the lunar surface; and
1-24           WHEREAS, The interest of the United Kingdom's finest
 2-1     technology-related enterprises in the Clear Lake area underscores
 2-2     its reputation as a world class hub in the aerospace and space
 2-3     exploration industries; and
 2-4           WHEREAS, Science and technology are certain to play a vital
 2-5     role in the prosperity of the Lone Star State in the future, and
 2-6     the presence of this prestigious and productive international trade
 2-7     mission is an apt confirmation of the significance of this mutually
 2-8     beneficial relationship; now, therefore, be it
 2-9           RESOLVED, That the 76th Legislature of the State of Texas
2-10     hereby designate May 17-22, 1999, as United Kingdom Trade Mission
2-11     to Clear Lake Week in the State of Texas and extend sincere best
2-12     wishes to those associated with this commendable event.
