HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
 1-1           WHEREAS, Many proud residents of the city of Gatesville are
 1-2     to be in Austin on May 20, 1999, to celebrate Gatesville Day at the
 1-3     State Capitol, and it is a pleasure and a privilege to welcome
 1-4     these esteemed Texans to Austin; and
 1-5           WHEREAS, Located along the beautiful Leon River, Gatesville
 1-6     is home to several outstanding city parks that provide residents
 1-7     with an array of outdoor recreational activities, from basketball
 1-8     to tennis to swimming; this notable Central Texas city was recently
 1-9     chosen to become a "Main Street" city, and Texas First Lady Laura
1-10     Bush was on hand for the announcement of this selection; and
1-11           WHEREAS, The city's historic downtown area features numerous
1-12     shopping and sight-seeing opportunities, and its most notable
1-13     attraction is the Coryell County Courthouse, one of the finest
1-14     remaining examples of Romanesque Renaissance Revival architecture
1-15     in Texas; built in 1897, the distinctive building is constructed of
1-16     hand-cut limestone, and the interior of the clock tower's copper
1-17     dome showcases a stunning stained-glass mosaic; and
1-18           WHEREAS, Gatesville residents celebrate their colorful
1-19     heritage and spirit throughout the year with festive events such as
1-20     the Wildcat Antique Show, the Shivaree Arts Fair and Rodeo, the
1-21     Gatesville Homecoming and Harvest Festival, the JackPot Roping and
1-22     PlayDay, and the annual Christmas Parade; and
1-23           WHEREAS, From its earliest days as an isolated settlement,
1-24     Gatesville has continued to grow both in size and in stature, and
 2-1     this expansion is evidenced by the numerous city improvement
 2-2     projects that have been completed or are currently underway,
 2-3     including a new fitness center, the reconstruction of the
 2-4     city/county airport, and a new public library across from City
 2-5     Hall; and
 2-6           WHEREAS, The citizens of Gatesville are justifiably proud of
 2-7     their community, for this unique town and its dedicated residents
 2-8     have added immeasurably to the rich history and culture of the Lone
 2-9     Star State, and their contributions are indeed worthy of special
2-10     legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it
2-11           RESOLVED, That the 76th Legislature of the State of Texas
2-12     hereby declare May 20, 1999, Gatesville Day at the State Capitol
2-13     and join the citizens of Gatesville in paying tribute to one of
2-14     Texas' finest cities; and, be it further
2-15           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-16     prepared for the people of Gatesville in commemoration of this
2-17     event and as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of
2-18     Representatives and Senate.
