HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
1-1 WHEREAS, After 40 years as head coach of Lubbock's Monterey
1-2 High School Plainsmen baseball team, Bobby Moegle is retiring, and
1-3 he is indeed deserving of special legislative recognition for his
1-4 longtime commitment to coaching excellence; and
1-5 WHEREAS, Coach Moegle arrived in Lubbock in 1959 and soon
1-6 breathed life into a team that had previously never won a district
1-7 title, much less a state championship; this coaching legend went on
1-8 to accrue 1,115 wins, which has earned him recognition as the
1-9 nation's winningest high school baseball coach; and
1-10 WHEREAS, During his four decades as the heart and soul of the
1-11 Monterey Plainsmen, Coach Moegle employed his inimitable style to
1-12 lead his teams to 33 district titles and four state titles; he also
1-13 established a reputation as a strict disciplinarian with a passion
1-14 for sound, fundamental baseball and unparalleled preparedness on
1-15 the diamond; and
1-16 WHEREAS, Hundreds of young men have gained immeasurably from
1-17 the unique approach of this U.S. infantry veteran and former St.
1-18 Louis Cardinal farmhand, whose daily after-school drill sessions
1-19 perhaps more closely resembled a boot camp than a high school
1-20 baseball practice; many of those men, however, have grown to regard
1-21 the taskmaster who ran those eternal practices with grudging
1-22 admiration, if not outright affection, and this fact as much as any
2-1 other stands as testament to Coach Moegle's influence; and
2-2 WHEREAS, This dedicated family man has received much love and
2-3 support throughout his coaching career from his wife, Carolyn, with
2-4 whom he has enjoyed a strong and lasting marriage filled with many
2-5 happy times and cherished family memories; they have been blessed
2-6 with two daughters, Sherri Hull and Melinda Heinrich, and have
2-7 happily welcomed two grandsons into the family fold; and
2-8 WHEREAS, Coach Moegle's motivational skills, baseball savvy,
2-9 and dedication to winning have earned him the lasting respect of
2-10 countless individuals, and his legacy will undoubtedly endure far
2-11 beyond the days of his retirement, both through the stadium that
2-12 proudly bears his name and the myriad stories that surround and
2-13 define this one-of-a-kind Texan; now, therefore, be it
2-14 RESOLVED, That the 76th Legislature of the State of Texas
2-15 hereby honor Coach Bobby Moegle on his retirement as baseball coach
2-16 of Lubbock's Monterey High School and extend to him best wishes for
