No. 309 76R17741 BE-D HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, On May 31, 1999, as our state and nation draw 1-2 together to mark Memorial Day, a ceremony in the Texas State 1-3 Cemetery will dedicate the Medal of Honor Monument in a fitting 1-4 tribute to the brave Lone Star soldiers who have earned America's 1-5 highest military honor; and 1-6 WHEREAS, The monument recognizes 83 native or adopted Texans 1-7 who have received the Medal of Honor; their valorous service 1-8 represented Texas in the Civil War, the Indian campaigns, the 1-9 Philippine Insurrection, the Veracruz campaign, World Wars I and 1-10 II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War; and 1-11 WHEREAS, The south face of the red granite obelisk presents 1-12 the three service branch medals, an inscription regarding the 1-13 circumstance of the awarding of the medal, and an inscription of 1-14 the purpose of the monument; each of the three remaining sides 1-15 represents the various branches of service and includes the names 1-16 of the campaigns and the names of the individuals who received the 1-17 medal; and 1-18 WHEREAS, The monument was designed by Texas Parks and 1-19 Wildlife landscape architect Bill McDonald and constructed by 1-20 Stasswender Memorials of Austin; the allegiance and artistry 1-21 brought to the fore in the creation of this monument give eloquent 1-22 voice to the respect and emotion Texans hold for these soldiers; 1-23 and 1-24 WHEREAS, There are 83 names inscribed on the monument, and 2-1 several of the 10 recipients still living will attend or have 2-2 family present for the ceremony; Texas Governor George W. Bush, 2-3 many state elected officials, members of the Texas Legislature, and 2-4 ranking military personnel will attend; and 2-5 WHEREAS, Each of the men whose names appear on the Medal of 2-6 Honor Monument demonstrated exemplary patriotism and valor, and 2-7 they serve as an inspiration for both their fellow soldiers and the 2-8 civilian public they protected; at 10 a.m. on May 31, 1999, their 2-9 families and friends will gather in remembrance, and it is a great 2-10 and moving honor to join in recognizing these courageous Texas 2-11 soldiers at this time; now, therefore, be it 2-12 RESOLVED, That the 76th Legislature of the State of Texas 2-13 hereby commemorate the dedication of the Medal of Honor Monument in 2-14 the Texas State Cemetery and pay tribute to the Texas soldiers who 2-15 have been awarded the Medal of Honor, for these men are owed a 2-16 profound debt and our deepest gratitude.
