 1-2                           HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION
 1-3     proposing a constitutional amendment to authorize garnishment of
 1-4     wages for the enforcement of court-ordered spousal  maintenance.
 1-5           BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 1-6           SECTION 1.  Section 28, Article XVI, Texas Constitution, is
 1-7     amended to read as follows:
 1-8           Sec. 28.  No current wages for personal service shall ever be
 1-9     subject to garnishment, except for the enforcement of
1-10     court-ordered:
1-11                 (1)  child support payments; or
1-12                 (2)  spousal maintenance.
1-13           SECTION 2.  This proposed constitutional amendment shall be
1-14     submitted to  the voters at an election to be held on November 2,
1-15     1999.  The ballot shall be printed to permit voting for or against
1-16     the proposition:  "The constitutional amendment authorizing
1-17     garnishment of wages for the enforcement of court-ordered spousal
1-18     maintenance."
