                                 A JOINT RESOLUTION
 1-1     proposing a constitutional amendment creating a vacancy in the
 1-2     office of district judge if the judge becomes a candidate for
 1-3     another public elective office.
 1-4           BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
 1-5           SECTION 1.  Article V, Texas Constitution, is amended by
 1-6     adding Section 7b to read as follows:
 1-7           Sec. 7b.  A person holding the office of district judge who
 1-8     announces the person's candidacy or otherwise becomes a candidate
 1-9     in any general, special, or primary election for any office of
1-10     profit or trust under the laws of this state or the United States,
1-11     other than the office of district judge, vacates the office of
1-12     district judge on the date of the announcement or candidacy.  A
1-13     vacancy created under this section is filled in the same manner as
1-14     other vacancies in the office of district judge.
1-15           SECTION 2.  This proposed constitutional amendment shall be
1-16     submitted to the voters at an election to be held November 2, 1999.
1-17     The ballot shall be printed to provide for voting for or against
1-18     the proposition:  "The constitutional amendment creating a vacancy
1-19     in the office of district judge if the judge becomes a candidate
1-20     for another public elective office."
