R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The recent passing of Litrelle Templeton Levy of
1-2 Houston on January 1, 1999, at the age of 67, has brought a great
1-3 loss to the family and many friends of this esteemed woman; and
1-4 WHEREAS, Born in Paris, Texas, on March 17, 1931, and reared
1-5 in nearby Cooper, Mrs. Levy attended Southern Methodist University,
1-6 earning a bachelor of music degree in 1952; in 1959, she received a
1-7 master's degree in social work from the Worden School of Social
1-8 Work at Our Lady of the Lake University; and
1-9 WHEREAS, Mrs. Levy, a woman known for her integrity and
1-10 generous spirit, was employed for almost three decades by Ben Taub
1-11 General Hospital as a staff psychiatric social worker and she
1-12 served as assistant director and later as director of the social
1-13 services department; and
1-14 WHEREAS, During her tenure with Ben Taub Hospital, Mrs. Levy
1-15 helped develop the emergency psychiatric social work program that
1-16 was used as a model throughout the nation; in addition to her work
1-17 for Ben Taub, she was an adjunct faculty member of Baylor College
1-18 of Medicine's Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science and
1-19 was a clinical field instructor for the University of Houston
1-20 School of Social Work; and
1-21 WHEREAS, In March 1991 this commendable woman was named
1-22 "Social Worker of the Year" by the Houston unit of the National
1-23 Association of Social Workers (NASW) in recognition of her many
1-24 achievements; and
2-1 WHEREAS, In addition to making vital contributions to Central
2-2 Texas citizens through her professional activities, Mrs. Levy also
2-3 lent her insight to numerous civic affairs, including the Harris
2-4 County Mental Health Needs Council, the Adult Mental Health
2-5 Services Advisory Council of the Harris County Mental Health and
2-6 Mental Retardation Agency, and the NASW, Texas Board; she also
2-7 served as chairman of the NASW, Houston Unit; and
2-8 WHEREAS, Among her many passions were a love of travel and an
2-9 appreciation for music, which she expressed through her membership
2-10 in the First Unitarian Church choir; a fiercely independent
2-11 individual, she was a longtime supporter of the Democratic Party;
2-12 and
2-13 WHEREAS, Litrelle Templeton Levy was a loyal and loving
2-14 woman, and though her sense of humor and zest for life will be
2-15 deeply missed, her memory will long endure in the hearts and minds
2-16 of all who were privileged to know her; now, therefore, be it
2-17 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
2-18 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Litrelle Templeton
2-19 Levy and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to
2-20 her children, Shanna Crawford Barnstone and Jason Templeton Levy;
2-21 to her sisters, Laura Kathryn Templeton and Betty Carolyn Colley;
2-22 to her brother, Dr. Robert Crawford Templeton; to her nieces and
2-23 nephews; to her loving companion, Martin Elfant; and to the many
2-24 other relatives and friends of this dear woman; and, be it further
2-25 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-26 prepared for the members of her family and that when the Texas
2-27 House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
3-1 Litrelle Templeton Levy.
