R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The passing of the Honorable Herbert Line on
 1-2     February 3, 1998, at the age of 90, brought a great loss to the
 1-3     family and many friends of this distinguished Texas jurist; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, Judge Line was born May 21, 1907, in Nash, and he
 1-5     remained a Bowie County resident for most his life; as such, he
 1-6     could honestly claim that he knew everything and everybody when it
 1-7     came to Bowie County; and
 1-8           WHEREAS, From arguing cases before the bench to hearing cases
 1-9     as a judge himself, his long tenure as an attorney made him a
1-10     respected and able public servant indeed; over the course of his
1-11     legal career, this respected gentleman served as a senior retired
1-12     district judge for the State of Texas, as Bowie County judge, and
1-13     as Bowie County district attorney; and
1-14           WHEREAS,  Judge Line was recognized for being particularly
1-15     patient and understanding with attorneys who were  just beginning
1-16     their legal practice; he was also noted for his strong will in the
1-17     courtroom; no one  questioned who was in charge of the forum when
1-18     Judge Line was seated, and he could be counted on to ensure that
1-19     justice would never be thwarted by technicalities; and
1-20           WHEREAS, A devoted family man as well, Judge Line and his
1-21     beloved wife, Clara, were blessed with a daughter, Mary Sue, and
1-22     their years together were truly happy ones, filled with many joyful
1-23     times and happy family memories; that joy and happiness only
1-24     increased as the family grew to include three grandchildren and six
 2-1     great-grandchildren; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, A number of civic groups benefited from this
 2-3     remarkable gentleman's participation, and they in turn enriched his
 2-4     life; he honored his faith at the Downtown First Baptist Church,
 2-5     was a member of both the state and local bar associations, and was
 2-6     a committed Mason and Shriner; and
 2-7           WHEREAS, Herbert Line was a man of singular integrity who set
 2-8     an inspirational example for attorneys and judges alike; though his
 2-9     guidance and leadership are deeply missed, his spirit surely lives
2-10     on in the hearts of all who knew him; now, therefore, be it
2-11           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
2-12     Legislature hereby pay tribute  to the life of the Honorable
2-13     Herbert Line and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his
2-14     family: to his wife, Clara; to his daughter, Mary Sue Hitt; to his
2-15     grandchildren and their spouses, Angela and Rusty Hatchett, Robert
2-16     and Patti Hitt, and Jeffery and Shawn Hitt; to his sister-in-law,
2-17     Ruth Line; to his six great-grandchildren; and to the many other
2-18     relatives and friends of this esteemed Texan; and, be it further
2-19           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-20     prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas
2-21     House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
2-22     Judge Herbert Line.
