No. 37 76R4073 MDM-D R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The untimely passing of Roberta Lee Williams High on 1-2 November 10, 1998, at the age of 54, brought a great loss to the 1-3 family and many friends of this beloved woman; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Born on March 21, 1944, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, 1-5 she graduated from Southwestern Oklahoma State University with a 1-6 degree in pharmacy and while attending there, she was a member of 1-7 Sigma Kappa Sorority; and 1-8 WHEREAS, Mrs. High was a loving wife and mother; she married 1-9 Doyle Eugene High in 1964 in Fort Cobb, Oklahoma, and the couple 1-10 shared a close, lasting relationship that was blessed with a son 1-11 and a daughter; and 1-12 WHEREAS, A licensed pharmacist in both Texas and Oklahoma, 1-13 she was a dynamic presence in her field and actively participated 1-14 in local, regional, state, and national pharmacy associations; 1-15 Mrs. High was appointed by Governor George W. Bush to the Texas 1-16 State Board of Pharmacy for a six-year term in February 1996, and 1-17 she served as vice-president of that distinguished panel; in 1-18 addition, she was a member of the West Texas Pharmacy Association 1-19 Board of Directors and served as president of the Big Country 1-20 Pharmacy Association; and 1-21 WHEREAS, Mrs. High was a pharmacy consultant for the Knox 1-22 County Hospital and also had held that position at hospitals in 1-23 Albany, Aspermont, Haskell, and Throckmorton; together with her 1-24 husband, she purchased the Oates Drug Store in Haskell, relocated 2-1 the store to its current location, and built the establishment into 2-2 a thriving business; and 2-3 WHEREAS, Public speaking was one of her primary interests, as 2-4 was exemplified by Mrs. High's involvement with the Talkin' Across 2-5 Texas Toastmasters Club, which she led as president; in addition, 2-6 she and her husband gave motivational and inspirational speeches 2-7 throughout Texas and other states, based on material from The 2-8 Redneck and the High Maintenance Woman, which they co-authored; and 2-9 WHEREAS, Mrs. High was also a gifted singer; she recorded an 2-10 album of religious songs, titled "The Four Friends," with Patsy 2-11 Blakley, Pam Gibson, and Susan Pope Jones, and she performed with 2-12 Mary Kennedy, Nelda Lane, and Becky Richardson Tubbs during the 2-13 Bicentennial celebration; and 2-14 WHEREAS, She participated in the choir and Sunday school at 2-15 the First Baptist Church, was a member of the Haskell Book Club, 2-16 and counted among her interests talking with people, helping stray 2-17 animals, and writing; and 2-18 WHEREAS, Mrs. High was extremely proud of the 34 young people 2-19 from the Haskell area who chose to become pharmacists, and she and 2-20 her husband encouraged and supported these students in their 2-21 pursuit of the profession Mrs. High so enjoyed; and 2-22 WHEREAS, Roberta High will be missed by all who knew her, but 2-23 her indomitable spirit will surely live on in the hearts and minds 2-24 of the many individuals whose lives she touched; now, therefore, be 2-25 it 2-26 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-27 Legislature hereby honor the memory of Roberta Lee Williams High 3-1 and extend deepest sympathy to the members of her family: to her 3-2 husband, Doyle Eugene High; to her daughter, Holli Anne High; to 3-3 her son and daughter-in-law, Kirk William and Laura Manning High; 3-4 to her brother, Robert Dee Williams; and to her aunts, Grace Frank, 3-5 Pearle Kirk, Katherine Meek, and Kathleen Roddy; and, be it further 3-6 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 3-7 prepared for the members of her family and that when the Texas 3-8 House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of 3-9 Roberta Lee Williams High.
