R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, On February 9, 1999, the La Marque Crimestoppers
 1-2     will honor Lieutenant William Edward Bird, Jr., for his outstanding
 1-3     service to Galveston County and the community of La Marque, and it
 1-4     is fitting on this auspicious occasion to recognize him for his
 1-5     many accomplishments; and
 1-6           WHEREAS, Lieutenant Bird's career in law enforcement began in
 1-7     1965, when he was employed as the chief police dispatcher for the
 1-8     Hitchcock Police Department; in 1966, he started working for the
 1-9     Galveston County Sheriff's Department as a deputy sheriff, a
1-10     position he held for the next 10 years; and
1-11           WHEREAS, A highly respected law enforcement officer,
1-12     Lieutenant Bird joined the La Marque Police Department in 1976 as a
1-13     patrol officer; he advanced to the position of sergeant in 1980 and
1-14     was promoted to departmental lieutenant in 1998, and during his
1-15     noteworthy tenure Lieutenant Bird has worked as a major crimes
1-16     investigator, as a narcotics supervisor, as supervisor of the
1-17     criminal investigations division, as coordinator of the La Marque
1-18     Crimestoppers, and as acting and interim chief of police; and
1-19           WHEREAS, This esteemed gentleman has dedicated his life to
1-20     defending and protecting his fellow citizens, and his fine work has
1-21     been recognized by numerous organizations, agencies, and
1-22     individuals, including the Office of the Governor of Texas, the
1-23     State of Texas Crimestoppers, United States Representative Jack
1-24     Brooks, and the Office of the Attorney General of Texas; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, Lieutenant Bird's welcome contributions to improving
 2-2     the quality of life in his community have greatly benefited the
 2-3     residents of La Marque, and it is indeed appropriate that he be
 2-4     commended at this time; now, therefore, be it
 2-5           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
 2-6     Legislature hereby honor Lieutenant William Edward Bird, Jr., for
 2-7     his outstanding record of public service and extend to him sincere
 2-8     best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further
 2-9           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-10     prepared for Lieutenant Bird as an expression of high regard by the
2-11     Texas House of Representatives.
