                                 R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to join
 1-2     the citizens of Edinburg in the joyous celebration of Edinburg Day
 1-3     at the State Capitol on February 10, 1999; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, Originally known as Chapin, the community serves as
 1-5     the western gateway to the Lower Rio Grande Valley and as the
 1-6     Hidalgo County seat; it first enjoyed a vibrant economy based on
 1-7     ranching, but successful irrigation efforts and a temperate climate
 1-8     have transformed the area into one of the nation's leading
 1-9     producers of vegetables and citrus fruits, and the community is
1-10     also home to many thriving industries; and
1-11           WHEREAS, Edinburg's outstanding civic leadership and dramatic
1-12     expansion have generated significant economic growth; recent
1-13     construction of the International Trade and Technology Building on
1-14     the campus of The University of Texas--Pan American has expanded
1-15     educational opportunities at one of the valley's premier
1-16     institutions of higher learning; and
1-17           WHEREAS, Another project in the planning process at the
1-18     university is a medical research facility, a component of the
1-19     Regional Academic Health Center, that would be the first such unit
1-20     in the country with a location suitable to the study of health
1-21     problems on the United States-Mexico border; and
1-22           WHEREAS, The community is also expanding in the area of
1-23     recreational opportunities, such as Supersplash! Adventure, a new
1-24     35-acre water park designed for family enjoyment; and
 2-1           WHEREAS, Edinburg boasts an active citizenry who champion a
 2-2     variety of worthy causes through their involvement in such
 2-3     organizations as the Edinburg 2020 Citizens Advisory Committees,
 2-4     the Edinburg Chamber of Commerce, the Edinburg Hispanic Chamber of
 2-5     Commerce, the Edinburg Hospital Authority, and the Edinburg Lions
 2-6     Club, and their stalwart commitment to these and many other groups
 2-7     has made the community a better place to live, work, and rear a
 2-8     family; and
 2-9           WHEREAS, The city of Edinburg has earned well-deserved
2-10     acclaim for its exceptional achievements, and twice it has received
2-11     the prestigious All-America City designation from the National
2-12     Civic League, a feat rarely matched by other communities; and
2-13           WHEREAS, Recognizing that the blessings of liberty must be
2-14     continually safeguarded, Edinburg has always been willing to pay
2-15     the ultimate price for freedom by sending its best and brightest
2-16     citizens to fight for America's highest ideals; the community is
2-17     home to people  from all walks of life, and it draws its strengths
2-18     and achievements from its diversity and proud history; and
2-19           WHEREAS, Throughout the years, Edinburg has distinguished
2-20     itself as one of our state's most outstanding communities, and it
2-21     is indeed fitting that the city and its residents receive
2-22     appropriate legislative recognition for their many accomplishments;
2-23     now, therefore, be it
2-24           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
2-25     Legislature hereby recognize February 10, 1999, as  Edinburg Day at
2-26     the Capitol and welcome the members of the city's delegation on
2-27     their visit to Austin; and, be it further
 3-1           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 3-2     prepared for the members of the Edinburg City Council as an
 3-3     expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
