R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The passing of the Honorable Hugh Gibson on June 18,
 1-2     1998, at the age of 79, brought a great loss to the family and
 1-3     friends of this esteemed gentleman; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, A well-known and highly regarded jurist, Judge
 1-5     Gibson was born in Cameron, Texas, and attended public schools in
 1-6     Houston before receiving bachelor's degrees in biology and
 1-7     economics from Rice University; and
 1-8           WHEREAS, After a stint in the Pacific Theater with the U.S.
 1-9     Army during World War II, he returned to Texas to study law at
1-10     Baylor Law School, where he excelled as a student and was named
1-11     editor of the school's first Law Review; and
1-12           WHEREAS, Judge Gibson taught law at his alma mater for a
1-13     short time before accepting a position as an assistant county
1-14     attorney in his adopted hometown of Galveston; in 1953, just two
1-15     years after he began practicing law, his long and successful career
1-16     as a jurist began when he was appointed judge of the Galveston
1-17     County Probate Court; and
1-18           WHEREAS, In 1968, Judge Gibson resigned that post to run a
1-19     successful campaign for election to the 56th district court, a
1-20     position he held until his 1979 appointment by President Jimmy
1-21     Carter to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of
1-22     Texas, Galveston Division; and
1-23           WHEREAS, A true student of the law, this kind and generous
1-24     individual was loved and appreciated by his fellow Galvestonians,
 2-1     and although he has been greatly missed by all who knew him, his
 2-2     legacy of outstanding jurisprudence and legal expertise will long
 2-3     be remembered by the citizens of Galveston County; now, therefore,
 2-4     be it
 2-5           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
 2-6     Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Hugh Gibson and that
 2-7     sincere sympathy be extended to his wife, Evalyn Gibson, and to the
 2-8     relatives and friends of this distinguished gentleman; and, be it
 2-9     further
2-10           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2-11     prepared for Mrs. Gibson as an expression of high regard by the
2-12     Texas House of Representatives.
