R E S O L U T I O N
 1-1           WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives takes great pride
 1-2     in recognizing the 50th anniversary of the Texas Transportation
 1-3     Institute; and
 1-4           WHEREAS, The largest university-affiliated transportation
 1-5     research organization in the nation, the Texas Transportation
 1-6     Institute provides invaluable information to the Texas Railroad
 1-7     Commission and the Texas Department of Transportation; and
 1-8           WHEREAS, This impressive agency contributes to the
 1-9     improvement of traffic safety by conducting research and acting as
1-10     a liaison between state programs, federal agencies, and private
1-11     sector industry; and
1-12           WHEREAS, In 1948 the forerunner of the Texas Transportation
1-13     Institute, the Cooperative Research Program, was officially
1-14     created; Texas Highway Department engineer, Dewitt C. Greer, and
1-15     former Texas Highway Department engineer and then-chancellor of the
1-16     A&M System, Gibb Gilchrist, recognized the need for research into
1-17     ways to save lives and money on Texas' burgeoning highway system,
1-18     and this cooperative effort has proved to be both successful and
1-19     enduring; and
1-20           WHEREAS, The Texas Highway Department, now the Texas
1-21     Department of Transportation, and the citizens of the state have
1-22     benefited immeasurably from the institute's outstanding work in the
1-23     field of transportation, and it is a privilege to honor the many
1-24     men and women who have contributed to its success; now, therefore,
 2-1     be it
 2-2           RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
 2-3     Legislature hereby recognize Texas Transportation Institute's 50
 2-4     years of service to the Lone Star State and commend the group's
 2-5     dedicated members, past and present, for their exemplary
 2-6     performance over the years; and, be it further
 2-7           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 2-8     prepared for the Texas Transportation Institute as an expression of
 2-9     high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
