R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is proud to join 1-2 with the citizens of Lufkin and Angelina County and members of the 1-3 Angelina County Chamber of Commerce Leadership Lufkin '99 Class in 1-4 celebrating Lufkin Day at the State Capitol on February 4, 1999; 1-5 and 1-6 WHEREAS, Located in the rolling hills of the East Texas Piney 1-7 Woods region, Angelina County was formerly the home of Caddo Indian 1-8 tribes; it was created from Nacogdoches County in 1846 and was 1-9 named for the legendary Indian maiden Angelina; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Its advantageous location has helped Angelina County 1-11 to flourish, and throughout its history the area has significantly 1-12 contributed to the state's prosperity; the county enjoys a strong 1-13 and diversified economic base, with lumber and wood products, 1-14 tourism, agribusiness, manufacturing, government and service 1-15 industries, commercial printing, concrete products, and cabinet 1-16 works as its major industries; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Lufkin, the county seat, is home to Angelina Junior 1-18 College, the Angelina County Exposition Center, and the accredited 1-19 Ellen Trout Zoo, which is known for its successful breeding 1-20 programs for West African crowned crane and Louisiana pine snakes; 1-21 and 1-22 WHEREAS, Area residents and visitors alike can enjoy learning 1-23 more about the rich heritage of the region by visiting the Texas 1-24 Forestry Museum, the Museum of East Texas, and the Medford 2-1 Collection of Western Art, which houses more than 50 paintings by 2-2 contemporary artists; and 2-3 WHEREAS, Outdoor sports enthusiasts and nature lovers delight 2-4 in the variety of activities available at Sam Rayburn Reservoir and 2-5 the Angelina and Davy Crockett national forests; further enhancing 2-6 this prime vacation region are state forests; city, county, and 2-7 state parks; and one of the top-rated golf courses in Texas; and 2-8 WHEREAS, Among the many unique celebrations hosted in the 2-9 region each year are the Texas Forest Festival, Angelina Benefit 2-10 Rodeo, Neches River Rendezvous, and Pineywoods Purgatory, an autumn 2-11 bike ride through rolling hills; and 2-12 WHEREAS, Rich in natural and cultural resources, Lufkin and 2-13 Angelina County are prosperous and their citizenry forward-looking, 2-14 and it gives the members of this chamber great pleasure to salute 2-15 this fine Texas city and county; now, therefore, be it 2-16 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-17 Legislature hereby recognize February 4, 1999, as Lufkin Day at the 2-18 State Capitol and extend warmest best wishes to all its citizens on 2-19 this noteworthy occasion.
