R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, United Ways of Texas help to raise millions of
1-2 dollars each year for Texans in need, and these worthy
1-3 organizations are truly deserving of special praise and
1-4 recognition; and
1-5 WHEREAS, United Ways of Texas began as the Community Chest in
1-6 Houston in 1921, and today there are more than 100 local United
1-7 Ways in the Lone Star State, leading the way in promoting
1-8 volunteerism in Texas; and
1-9 WHEREAS, In 1998 alone, local United Way campaigns collected
1-10 more than $240 million; these funds are distributed to more than
1-11 1,900 charities and community agencies, with local donations
1-12 earmarked for the needs of the community in which they are
1-13 collected; and
1-14 WHEREAS, The membership organization, United Way of Texas, is
1-15 a public policy voice for local United Ways; a leader in
1-16 collaborative funding, innovation, and training; and the model and
1-17 resource for excellence; and
1-18 WHEREAS, United Ways of Texas are the largest private funders
1-19 of health and human services in Texas, and thanks to the superior
1-20 efforts of the many employees and volunteers of these noteworthy
1-21 organizations, countless Texans have received invaluable assistance
1-22 and support in their times of need; now, therefore, be it
1-23 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas
1-24 Legislature hereby commend the employees and volunteers of the
2-1 United Ways of Texas for their outstanding service to the state's
2-2 citizens and recognize their dedication to the virtues of
2-3 compassion and generosity; and, be it further
2-4 RESOLVED, That February 3, 1999, be designated United Way Day
2-5 at the Capitol and that Texans everywhere be encouraged to take a
2-6 moment to expand their awareness of the worthy contributions made
2-7 by the United Ways of Texas to the many communities of this state.
