R E S O L U T I O N 1-1 WHEREAS, The city of Fort Worth has existed nearly as long as 1-2 the State of Texas itself, and 1999 marks the 150th anniversary of 1-3 the city known as Cowtown; and 1-4 WHEREAS, Named for General William Jenkins Worth, the city 1-5 was founded in 1849 when a company of U.S. Army soldiers 1-6 established a fort at the confluence of the two forks of the 1-7 Trinity River to provide protection for settlers; and 1-8 WHEREAS, From its humble beginnings, Fort Worth has grown to 1-9 become America's 28th-largest city and is home to a diverse 1-10 population and a solid industrial base with a well-trained 1-11 workforce; and 1-12 WHEREAS, The city's economic and social success is based 1-13 largely on the formation of various public and private 1-14 partnerships, such as the Alliance Corridor Project, a cooperative 1-15 venture of city, state, and federal organizations that has resulted 1-16 in the creation of a world-class economic development center; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Cowtown earned its nickname during the late 1860s, 1-18 when a band of cattlemen drove the first of many thousands of head 1-19 of cattle across the Trinity River on their way to the Chisholm 1-20 Trail; it seems that residents of neighboring Dallas proved most 1-21 unhelpful in assisting the cowboys in their search for a place to 1-22 ford the river, while Fort Worther Charles Daggett was more than 1-23 willing to lead the cattlemen to an advantageous crossing point on 1-24 that fateful spring day in 1866; and 2-1 WHEREAS, The citizens of Fort Worth are justifiably proud of 2-2 their city, with its blend of exceptional people, thriving business 2-3 opportunities, unique culture and heritage, and other 2-4 quality-of-life assets, and it is with great pleasure that the 2-5 members of this chamber pay tribute to the many noteworthy 2-6 individuals who have contributed to the success of this estimable 2-7 city; now, therefore, be it 2-8 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas 2-9 Legislature hereby recognize the 150th anniversary of the city of 2-10 Fort Worth and extend best wishes to its many fine residents; and, 2-11 be it further 2-12 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be 2-13 prepared for the citizens of Fort Worth as an expression of highest 2-14 regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
