R E S O L U T I O N
1-1 WHEREAS, The city of Fort Worth has existed nearly as long as
1-2 the State of Texas itself, and 1999 marks the 150th anniversary of
1-3 the city known as Cowtown; and
1-4 WHEREAS, Named for General William Jenkins Worth, the city
1-5 was founded in 1849 when a company of U.S. Army soldiers
1-6 established a fort at the confluence of the two forks of the
1-7 Trinity River to provide protection for settlers; and
1-8 WHEREAS, From its humble beginnings, Fort Worth has grown to
1-9 become America's 28th-largest city and is home to a diverse
1-10 population and a solid industrial base with a well-trained
1-11 workforce; and
1-12 WHEREAS, The city's economic and social success is based
1-13 largely on the formation of various public and private
1-14 partnerships, such as the Alliance Corridor Project, a cooperative
1-15 venture of city, state, and federal organizations that has resulted
1-16 in the creation of a world-class economic development center; and
1-17 WHEREAS, Cowtown earned its nickname during the late 1860s,
1-18 when a band of cattlemen drove the first of many thousands of head
1-19 of cattle across the Trinity River on their way to the Chisholm
1-20 Trail; it seems that residents of neighboring Dallas proved most
1-21 unhelpful in assisting the cowboys in their search for a place to
1-22 ford the river, while Fort Worther Charles Daggett was more than
1-23 willing to lead the cattlemen to an advantageous crossing point on
1-24 that fateful spring day in 1866; and
2-1 WHEREAS, The citizens of Fort Worth are justifiably proud of
2-2 their city, with its blend of exceptional people, thriving business
2-3 opportunities, unique culture and heritage, and other
2-4 quality-of-life assets, and it is with great pleasure that the
2-5 members of this chamber pay tribute to the many noteworthy
2-6 individuals who have contributed to the success of this estimable
2-7 city; now, therefore, be it
2-8 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 76th Texas

2-11 be it further
2-12 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
